The Soup Kitchen at Work
We are always in need of volunteer shoppers, cooks for our cooking teams, and servers:
-
Shoppers go to the Community Food Bank of NJ which is located in Hillside. Food is picked up once monthly on the third Thursday of the month. The Community Food Bank supplies the Soup Kitchen Ministry with food at a very reasonable cost.
-
Cooking teams ranging from 6-10 members each meet at the parish's kitchen approximately four times a year to prepare a hot mail. The activities of prep/cooking/clean-up takes about three hours.
-
Servers deliver the prepared food to Harlem every Sunday morning and to Newark every Monday morning.
Your Help is Needed & Welcome!
FAQs
How can I help?
You can volunteer to be a shopper, cook or a server.
What kind of meals do we cook?
Hot meals include tasty dishes such as Pasta Bolognese, Fiesta Turkey with Rice, and Ham, Macaroni and Cheese. Proven recipes are used since cooking is done for a large amount of guests.
When and where is the cooking done?
Every week, teams meet during the day or in the evenings, and on Saturday mornings. All food is prepared in the church kitchen.
How long does it take to serve a meal?
Depends on the amount of guests at the local soup kitchen. Expect several hours from the time you leave the church until your return. Teams leave the church very early Sunday and Monday mornings. Mass is said with the Little Sisters in Harlem and in Newark. After Mass, the meal is served.
How are volunteers/food transported to the soup kitchens in Harlem and Newark?
The church provides the servers with a van that accommodates twelve passengers. Other alternatives are to car pool or take your own car.
If I drive my own car, is parking available?
Street parking in Harlem requires a permit which the church provides for the day.
Newark has a parking lot.
How is Soup Kitchen supported?
Our Ministry is supported in a number of ways:
- Our parish and parishioners provide financial support
- The Community Food Bank of NJ supplies food at a significant discount
- Parishioners are very generous with their donations of time and food
- Corporations provide food and financial assistance
