What is YouthREACH?

YouthREACH is Presentation Youth Ministry's way of delving into the many social issues in our world and addresses how Catholic Christians respond to these issues. It is done as a service overnight. During the experience, teenage participants will tackle some of the causes of the issue, participate in direct service that will benefit those who are dealing with this social dilemma and explore through a variety of experiences the issue in depth.

Hope for the Homeless

This weekend’s topic is homelessness. Along with exploring the issue in a variety of creative ways, teenagers will interact with the poor and homeless and have the option of seeing what homelessness feels like by sleeping overnight in a cardboard box on the parish front lawn. By doing so, participants will come to a greater understanding of the feeling of homelessness while being advocates for them at our parish.

Who is this experience for?

Any teenager in high school may attend this weekend with parental/guardian permission. Registration forms will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis as space is limited to 25 participants.

Who runs the overnight?

The overnight is coordinated by the experienced members of our volunteer youth ministry team and adult service coordinators, along with trained adult volunteers from the parish and a team of the Youth Ministry’s Peer Ministers.

When and where is it?

The retreat will be held on Saturday, October 4 to Sunday October 5, 2008, at the Church of the Presentation. Participants will be transported to and from the service experience during the weekend. Arrival at the Church on Saturday should be at 1 pm and will conclude at 10:30 am on Sunday.

What should I bring for the overnight?

Warm, comfortable clothes, pillow, outdoor clothes for sleeping overnight, sleeping bag, hat, toiletries, gloves, extra socks.

Please leave walkmen, iPods, MP3 players and other electronics that detract from community interaction at home! Cell phones, if brought, should be used only for emergencies.

The most important thing to bring is AN OPEN MIND and a WILLINGNESS TO SERVE!

What is the cost of the retreat?

The cost of the retreat is $25. Please make checks payable to Church of the Presentation send it in to the Youth Ministry Office as soon as possible.

Scholarships are available for families who may have difficulty sending their teenager on this experience. Please contact our Director of Youth Ministry, Catzel Bumpus at 201-327-1313 ext. 28 or by email to: cbumpus@churchofpresentation.org if your teen is in need of a scholarship.

PLEASE NOTE:

COMING TOGETHER FOR A WEEKEND, WE, AS A GROUP, FACE THE POSSIBILITY OF AN INDIVIDUAL BOY OR GIRL WHO WE MAY DEEM BEYOND OUR PASTORAL CAPABILITIES. THIS MAY INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS OR SUSPICION OF ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE. THEREFORE, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO NOTIFY A PARENT OR SEND A PERSON HOME IF IN OUR ESTIMATION WE DEEM THIS ACTION NECESSARY. IN THESE CASES, IT IS THE EXPECTATION THAT THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN PICK UP HIS/HER TEEN WHEN CONTACTED. WE HOPE THAT PROBLEMS WILL BE AVOIDED, BUT WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO FULLY UNDERSTAND OUR POSITION .
